DOC Research Institute Supervisory Board Chairman Attends 2017 BRICS Think Tank Forum in China

21-23 March 2017, Beijing – Chairman of the Dialogue of Civilizations (DOC) Research Institute Supervisory Board, Dr Vladimir Yakunin, has addressed the 2017 BRICS Think Thank Forum, held in Beijing ahead of the BRICS leaders’ upcoming summit to be held in Xiamen, China, later this year.

In his speech at Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Dr Yakunin looked at the issue of globalisation as an irrevocable process and globalism as an ideology. He also noted that DOC RI experts are tracking events that call into question the current system of international relations, indicating that today’s world is looking for alternative models of international cooperation.

The challenge we face today is to create a world that will accommodate a variety of different development models. Looking at the future for BRICS countries, Dr Yakunin said the BRICS expert community should advise their respective governments on how to adjust local legislation to support further collaboration. He also suggested that, by aiding the BRICS countries’ further development, the expert community will create pillars for sustainable development elsewhere.

During the three-day trip, Dr Vladimir Yakunin was also invited to address the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and gave a guest lecture at the School of Government, Peking University. Both talks focused on international relations between Russia, China and the United States.

In addition to these public speaking opportunities, over the three-day visit, the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute delegation, accompanied by two professors from Moscow State University (MSU) met with key think tanks in China and agreed on formats for future research cooperation.
