DOC RI invitation: book presentation of new Research Director in Economics and Political Sciences, Vladimir Popov

Vladimir Popov joined DOC Research Institute several months ago and will present the book, ‘Mapping a New World Order – The Rest Beyond the West, edited by himself and Piotr Dutkiewicz, on September 8th from 10.00 – 16.00.

Vladimir Popov was a Principal Researcher in the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is also a professor emeritus at the New Economic School in Moscow, and an adjunct research professor at the Institute of European and Russian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. From 2009 to 2015, he worked in DESA, UN, as a Senior Economic Affairs Officer and Inter-regional Adviser.

Besides Popov and Dutkiewicz, there will be also other authors like Jomo Kwame Sundaram and Prabhat Patnaik in attendance, as well as commentators like Karin Fischer, Johannes Jäger, and Sebastian Vollmer.

“When countries of the Global South are referred to as “the rest” it is an ironic response to the arrogance of some Westerners in considering themselves the centre of the world. In 2011, Alice Amsden, the famous US economist, published a book called ‘The rise of the “rest”’ and our subtitle refers to that”, says Vladimir Popov.

This book identifies possible factors responsible for the recent rise of many developing countries. It examines how robust these trends actually are, and argues that the rise of ‘the rest’ not only implies geopolitical shifts, but could lead to proliferation of new growth models in the Global South and to profound changes in international economic relations.
