Berlin, 20 September 2018 – Vladimir Popov, Research Director at the Berlin-based Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC), will present a joint research project by DOC and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) at the 2018 SPECA Economic Forum in Almaty on 20-21 September 2018 on the subject of “Structural and Economic Transformation Towards Sustainable Development in the SPECA Region”.

SPECA is the acronym for the United Nations Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA). It was launched in 1998 to strengthen sub-regional cooperation in Central Asia and its integration into the world economy. ESCAP and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) jointly provide overall support to the program.

The 2018 Forum in Almaty is jointly organized by the Republic of Kazakhstan, SPECA, ESCAP and UNECE. It convenes under the rubric ‘Twenty Years of SPECA: A New Stage in Regional Cooperation for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development‘. The objectives are to assess “developments in transport, trade, environment, water and energy, statistics, knowledge-based development and gender and economy, contributed towards regional economic cooperation and sustainable development of the SPECA participating countries”.

The forum will focus on long-term development in areas like infrastructure, regional integration, building of partnerships, cooperation among SPECA countries and on regional challenges and solutions. Vladimir Popov will present his recommendations for a sustainable structural economic transformation in the SPECA Region during the 4th session of the Forum.
