Kolkata, 3 September 2018, The Management Development Institute (MDI), one of the Indian Government’s flagship research and education institutions, and the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC), a leading independent think tank headquartered in Berlin, will hold a conference on ‘Sustainable Development: A value chain perspective’ in Murshidabad, West Bengal on 7-8 September.
The theme of the conference is sustainability and sustainable development, due to Indian government’s recognition of natural resources as the key to country’s sustainable economic development and well-being of the people. The same sentiments are echoed across the South Asian region as a whole.
Recently, the importance of sustainable development has received growing recognition in more regions of the world. For businesses, sustainable development means adopting strategies and activities that meet the needs of the enterprise and its stakeholders, while protecting, sustaining, and enhancing human and natural resources. If the benefits of sustainable development are to be reaped, the planning of businesses must include not only efforts to improve sustainable development, but also corporate sustainability.
Stakeholders are now putting pressure on corporations to focus on economic, environmental, and society-focused activities. Though, businesses are trying to apply the principles of sustainable development to their operations, it is challenging for them to translate the principles of sustainable development to their daily operations, while safeguarding their other business objectives.
The aim of the conference is to share best practices and knowledge related to strategies for incorporating sustainable development principles into various management practices. A number of experts from Asia and India will take part in setting an agenda for consideration by the state and the central government.
Aside from the in-depth discussions and networking opportunities during the event, the conference will provide the basis for a report to be released, focusing on the issue of business and sustainable development.
Pooran Chandra Pandey, Managing Project Director of DOC RI India, will be a key note speaker, and some 200 participants are expected to take part in the conference.
