Vladimir Yakunin, Chairman of the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC), held talks with Dariga Nazarbayeva, speaker of the upper house of the Kazakh parliament, to discuss the role of dialogue among civilisations in tackling major global issues in today’s world.
Dr Yakunin gave a presentation on the DOC’s history and mission, as well as its current activities. The DOC works closely with partners in Kazakhstan, and recently contributed to the Astana Club’s “2019 Global Risk Rating” for the Eurasia region.
The sides agreed to continue to continue seeking opportunities for cooperation. Dr Yakunin invited Dr Nazarbayeva to participate in the 2019 Rhodes Forum, which takes place in October under the title “Global (dis)order: Towards dialogue-based worldviews” – takes place on 11-12 October 2019 on the eponymous Greek island. Dr Nazarbayeva in turn extended an invitation for Dr Yakunin to attend the next edition of the Eurasian Media Forum, the Astana-based international platform for dialogue that she chairs.
Civilizational approaches emphasising the importance of issues such as values, traditions, history and religion are increasingly being used to understand the nature of current systemic crises and seek new ways to tackle key challenges.
Long advocated by the DOC and its predecessor, World Public Forum Dialogue of Civilizations, the concept of dialogue among civilisations has emerged in the global policy-making arena as a constructive and progressive tool that points the way toward a multilateral world of dialogue and partnership.
President Xi Jinping in May further strengthened the global credibility of the concept with his keynote speech at the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, which attracted thousands of participants in Beijing.
High-level global platforms such as the Rhodes Forum, the DOC’s flagship public event, and the Eurasian Media Forum chaired in Astana by Dr Nazarbayeva, serve as key events for the promotion and practical implementation of the concept of dialogue among civilisations, and generate specific policy recommendations for global leaders and institutions such as the G20 and T20.
Vladimir Yakunin said:
“Kazakhstan as a country is one of the great examples of the potential of dialogue and a consensus-based approach. Under the country’s first president, Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan achieved unprecedented progress among countries of the region, and forged a nation based on a common humanity out of a diverse tapestry of ethnicities and religious beliefs. Internationally, too, Kazakhstan has consistently demonstrated a great skill in pursuing a balanced path that has garnered great respect globally.”
