The Chairman of the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC), Vladimir Yakunin, presented the work of the DOC and the agenda of this year’s Rhodes Forum to senior public figures and opinion leaders at the Astana Economic Forum, Central Asia’s leading international dialogue platform.
Discussions were held among others with Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, first president of Kazakhstan; Dariga Nazarbayeva, speaker of the Kazakh Senate; Kazakh Prime Minister Askar Mamin; Armenian President Armen Sarkissian; and Juan Manuel Santos, former President of Colombia and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
Dr Yakunin presented the work of the DOC to promote the dialogue of civilizations model, and extended invitations to speak at the Rhodes Forum, the DOC’s flagship public event. The 17th edition of the Forum – titled “Global (dis)order: Towards dialogue-based worldviews” – takes place on 11-12 October 2019 on the eponymous Greek island.
Dr Yakunin said:
“The concept of dialogue among civilizations is becoming increasingly accepted in the global mainstream. This represents a strong validation of the work of the Dialogue of Civilizations movement and the Rhodes Forum, which have strongly advocated the concept for many years since their inception in the early 2000s.
“If dialogue among civilizations concept achieve its full potential in the global policy-making arena, then today’s leaders and global institutions need coherent policy advice that will help them build consensus-based solutions to the challenges we face today. This is exactly what events such as the Rhodes Forum and Astana Economic Forum can give them, and what makes them such important platforms.”
