Dialogue of Civilizations deepens partnerships with Rhodes Municipality and South Aegean Region
The Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC) has strengthened its long-standing partner relationships with the Greek authorities in the Municipality of Rhodes and the South Aegean Region, the traditional hosts of the DOC’s annual flagship Rhodes Forum.
A DOC delegation led by CEO Jean-Christophe Bas held successful talks with Mayor of Rhodes Andonis V. Cambourakis and Governor of the South Aegean Region George Hatzimarkos that covered multiple opportunities for collaboration and led to an agreement to sign Memorandums of Understanding later this year.
Mayor Ghatzidiakos and Governor Chatzimarkos will be guests at this year’s Rhodes Forum on 10-11 October, and the DOC also looks forward, as in previous years, to welcoming representatives of the Greek government currently in formation to its flagship event. The Rhodes Municipality will host a gala dinner for participants on the first night of the Forum, as well as a reception for media.
The DOC, led by Chairman Vladimir Yakunin and Jean-Christophe Bas, is keen to develop further its close partnership with Rhodes and the South Aegean Region, both at the Rhodes Forum and also throughout the year by creating synergy and opportunities and developing projects of common interest. The Greek authorities expressed interest in collaborating on the “Responsible Finance and Culture” project being run by the DOC and UNESCO.
The island of Rhodes has since 2002 played host to the annual Rhodes Forum, which has become a prominent event in the intellectual life of the region and makes a significant contribution to the local economy. The DOC has brought nearly 10,000 leaders, heads of state, businessmen, influencers and journalists from around the world to Rhodes to attend the Forum over these 17 years, demonstrating its profound attachment to the island, its culture and its spirit. The Institute intends to continue pursuing this commitment in a spirit of collaboration and mutual support.
As the cradle of democracy and incubator of some of the ideas that have shaped the course of European and global history, Greece symbolises the perfect home for the ideas-driven Rhodes Forum, which brings together leaders from the political, diplomatic, academic and business communities to discuss crucial issues facing the world.
The 2019 Rhodes Forum takes the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall to examine the deep changes our societies and our world are undergoing, under three headings:
- Sustainable economic development;
- Global architecture and global (geo)politics; and
- Digitalised lives, ethical standards, and the revival of civility.
