We, the co-founders of Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute (DOC) are sincerely concerned about the recent development between two member states of the Council of Europe, Armenia and Azerbaijan. When the two states were admitted to the Council of Europe on 25 January 2001 the then leaders, Robert Kocharian and the late Hajdar Aliyev committed their countries to peaceful solution of their conflict and to maintain ceasefire as long as an accord is not achieved. It is our deep desire to urge the peaceful solution as there is no military solution. We appeal to the parties to stop immediately fighting and in particular attacks on civilians. If fighting will go on we see the danger of a conflagration that can destroy not only the region but may end in a humanitarian catastrophe and in a geopolitical disaster. We associate ourselves in this regard with the emotional warning issued by our board member Ruben Vardanyan. But the end of the fighting is not enough. After more than 30 years of confrontation it is high time for dialogue and reconciliation. We are convinced that this is the only way for the people of both nations to live in peace and prosperity.
