Since 2008 John Laughland has been Director of Studies at the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation, Paris (www.idc-europe.org). Prior to taking up that post, from 2006 to 2007 he edited the quarterly journal "Geopolitical Affairs", published by the Daedalos Institute of Geopolitics, Cyprus.
From 1995 to 2008, John Laughland was European Director of the European Foundation, London, which was chaired by Sir Bill Cash MP (www.europeanfoundation.org). From 1992 to 2005 he was founder member of the British Helsinki Human Rights Group, with a particular interest in post-Communist Europe. From 2009 to 2012 he was a lecturer at the Centre of Permanent Education, University Paris I, (Panthéon-Sorbonne), and from 2008 to 2012 he was a member of the Centre for the History of Central Europe, University Paris IV (Sorbonne).
From 2002 to 2004 John Laughland was a lecturer at the University of Marne-la-Vallée. He spent one year (2001-2002) as visiting lecturer at the University of St Pius V, Rome.
From 1991 to 1995 he was a lecturer at the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences-Po), Paris, including some time (1994) as a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy, Bucharest. From 1990 to 1995 he was a lecturer at the Training Institute of the Bank of France, and from 1990 to 1992 he was a junior lecturer at University Paris-III (Sorbonne Nouvelle).
