Prof. Walter D. Mignolo Receives Dr Honoris Causa


An honourary degree (Dr Honoris Causa) was presented to DOC expert Prof. Walter D. Mignolo by the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, National University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, on 23 November 2016.

Mignolo received the honourary degree in the humanities in recognition of his scholarship and teaching. The university calls him an ‘intellectual committed to social struggles and the expansion of human rights’ and notes ‘his theoretical contributions in the philosophical, political and literary fields, through innovative, challenging and provocative conceptualizations’.

Mignolo is a member of the DOC Programme Council, which provides guidance and advice on the overall development of the DOC´s research agenda.

Mignolo is an Argentinian semiotician (École des Hautes Études), a professor of literature, and director of the Center for Global Studies and the Humanities at Duke University. He has published extensively on semiotics and literary theory and researched different aspects of the modern and colonial worlds, exploring concepts such as global coloniality, the geopolitics of knowledge, transmodernity, border thinking, and pluriversality.
