Akeel Bilgrami

Akeel Bilgrami is the Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University and the Director of
Columbia's Heyman Center for the Humanities. He studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar
and before that at Elphinstone College, Bombay. He has a PhD from the University of Chicago. His
books include Belief and Meaning, Self-Knowledge and Resentment and the forthcoming Politics and
the Moral Psychology of Identity with Harvard University Press. He is currently writing a book called
What is a Muslim? which is about religion and secularism in the global context, for Princeton
University Press and a small book on Gandhi's thought and its relevance for today for Columbia
University Press. He has a longer-term project on 'Practical Reason', that is to say, the notion of
rationality in Ethics and Politics.
