In 1973, Vyacheslav Nikonov began his studies at the Faculty of History of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, specialising in modern and contemporary history. In 1989, he became the youngest Doctor of History in the USSR. It was the same year when he was transferred to the Central Committee of the USSR Communist Party to work as an instructor, and later as the head of the Ideology Department. In 1991, he served as assistant to the Chief of Staff of the President of the USSR. From August 1991 until the end f the Cold War, he was an assistant to the head of the State Security Committee (KGB) of the USSR.
