Join the DOC Berlin to hear from the renowned Princeton scholar and influential commentator Richard A. Falk on Trump, the mid-term election results, and what this means in a time of changing world order.

This enlightening event, the first in the DOC’s new ‘Meet in Mitte’ series of insightful discussions and lectures, is vital for anyone seeking to enhance their understanding of how developments in Washington affect the currently transient international order.

As we all know, the current international order is in transition, driven by the interplay of its main actors: Washington; Moscow; Beijing; and less significantly, the European Union. The international order is currently characterised by chronic instability, regional and global turmoil, and a dramatic decline in its ease of governance.

In Professor P. W. Schulze’s recent book Multipolarity: The promise of disharmony, Richard A. Falk argues that the US is no longer the principal agent of change and geopolitical discipline that it once was for myriad reasons, including Trump’s nationalist retreats from global leadership roles.

Falk tentatively suggests that a progressive backlash against Trumpism in the United States, and perhaps elsewhere, will give rise to a new global mood receptive to enhanced multilateralism.

Will the mid-term elections on 6 November provide the beginning of this backlash? Or will the legislative and executive branches remain under unified control? What might either scenario mean in the current context of radical uncertainty? And what kind of challenges will arise for Europe?

On 12 November, less than a week after the mid-term elections, Richard Falk will join the DOC in Berlin to analyse the developments in Washington and the implications they could have for the changing world order.

Attendance will provide participants with an excellent opportunity to network with peers. Refreshments will be provided. Prior registration is necessary to secure your place.

This event will take place in English.
